painted canvases are geared toward the American man, taking into account the recent trend toward more traditional pursuits and sartorial styles.
Deyber’s talent is to take a common-phrase and reinterpret it visually, thereby making the familiar suddenly unfamiliar to the viewer. For the baseball enthusiast there’s the small office-scale canvas, “At the Drop of a Hat” (Yankee Hat), which depicts the famed home-team cap falling through an atmospheric sky. Also on display, a large scale painting in heavy Ash frame shows a rabbit with hisJagermeister, beer and cigarettes, aptly titled “Bad Hare Day”. Even Harry Truman’s favored phrase, “The Buck Stops Here”, gets the Deyber treatment – a large stag halted by a Stop sign.
As a collection of narratives, the pieces push traditional boundaries of surrealism with impeccable detail. The artist’s cunning sense of humor inhabits each piece and is offered in an unique, unexpected light. Adroit paintings with palpable visuals meet skillfully applied techniques of composition, light and contrasting colors, for imaginary pieces that dance between the realm of reality and fantasy.
His unique mix of dark humor and skilled brushwork is what has made Robert Deyber a cult favorite among collectors and celebrities alike. Deyber collectors seamlessly transcend all traditional boundaries, whether stylistic or geographical. Private and corporate collectors throughout the United States as well as throughout Europe and Asia have acquired Deyber’s paintings. His work has strong appeal and continues to be collected by many in the entertainment industry, including independent film producers, well-known screenwriters and designers. Musician Tom Petty is one of the artist’s champions and commissioned Deyber to create his 2006 album cover for “Highway Companion”.
These new paintings are keyed toward the “urban woodsman”, the dashing Don Drapers and the Steve McQueen enthusiasts. References to poker, wild animals, sports and sex, are set to a backdrop of sweeping skies and burnished landscapes – a satisfying mix of unquestionable talent and tongue-incheek humor.
Robert Deyber was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. His ancestors moved to the town in the 1850s where his father owned a real estate firm on Mason Street for 30 years and was one of the original developers of Burning Tree Country Club and the surrounding community.
Robert Deyber’s career has taken him all over the world. He lived for a while in the Umbria region of Italy, and also lived for a time in San Francisco and New York before moving to Boston. He currently resides in Connecticut and is exclusively represented by Martin Lawrence Galleries
