AFA SEMI-PRO FOOTBALL SPRING LEAGUES MAKE THEIR MARK
The world of semi-pro football has been busy this spring. In Florida, the St. Petersburg Sharks (12-0) remained undefeated and successfully defended its Southern States Football League title this past week-end with a win over the traditionally powerful Knights of Miami (11-2). Also in the sunshine state, the Manasota Stars of the United Football League will attempt to retain its league title by facing the Broward Outlaws this weekend.
Along the eastern coast, the third year Diamond Football League had a league record sixteen teams participate in 2002, and it has determined its final four playoff teams. The New Castle Saints (8-1), South Jersey Giants (9-0), and Hampton Roads Bulldogs (7-2) will try to dethrone the defending champion Prince George Cardinals (9-0) in the coming weeks.
Texas is the home to several spring leagues. A tight race remains in the Dallas Amateur Football League as three teams vie for top league honors – Denton Blast (6-1), Paris Bombers (6-2), and East Texas Oilers (5-2). Likewise, the West Texas Football League has an exciting title chase as four teams are dueling over the last two weeks of regular season battles – Abilene Crush (6-1), Odessa Rough Riders (5-2), Vernon Jaguars (5-2), and San Angelo Cavalry (4-2). A few weeks ago, the Southwest Football League of El Paso crowned the El Paso Aztecs (5-3) as its champion after an upset win over the El Paso Wolfpack (7-2).
To the north, the Oklahoma Football League has a battle between the McAlester Bulls (5-1) and Stigler Panthers (5-2) for the league’s top playoff seed. The Wellington Rangers (2-1) lost its first Southern Kansas Football League contest in three years this past weekend to the Conway Springs Cardinals (2-1).
Out west, the Golden State Amateur Football League has a twenty team line-up in its inaugural season. Top teams thus far are South Bay Buccaneers (8-0), Milpitas Rams (6-1), Redwood City 49ers (6-1), and NorCal Lawmen (7-2). The Bucs have only relinquished eight points so far this season. The second year West Coast Football Association will crown its king this weekend as the Northeast Bombers (5-4) attempt to upset the tough Northwest Pirates (8-1).
The thirteen team National Public Safety Football League consists of teams composed of police, fire, and correctional personnel from departments across the nation. With several weeks remaining in its season, the New York Finest (NYPD) and the Los Angeles Centurions (LAPD) are still boasting identical 3-0 undefeated records.
Several leagues have begun play within the past couple of weeks. The Rogue Warriors are an early leader in the Oregon Football League. The Pocatello Silverbacks (4-0) are quickly out of the gates in the Rocky Mountain Football League, and they are being chased by the Madison Lionz and Idaho Falls Mustangs. The South Ogden Rhino-Raiders have assumed its familiar perch at the top of the Utah Football League, and they are currently joined by the undefeated Utah County Blitz.
In June, the Great Plains Football League, the Colorado Football Conference, and the Northwest Football League kick off their 2002 seasons.
As each league champion emerges (spring/summit/fall) it puts them in line for a possible ÂÂinvitationÂÂ to the AFAÂÂs season ending ÂÂNational Tournament of ChampionsÂÂ which could lead them to an AFA Regional Championship title and/or a shot at playing for the AFAÂÂs 23rd annual National Championship on December 14, 2002. Details on the AFA’s “Nationals” will be revealed during the Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame weekend in Canton, Ohio on June 22nd.
