With another big weekend of playoff action coming up, the AFA national association will be monitoring closely the results of the various post season tournaments across the country. While the AFA had for years promoted the fact that league champions should be the only teams to qualify for advancement to AFA regional and/or national titles – individual tournament directors from coast to coast wanted to see more teams involved in post season play, not less. As we have stated previously, thatâs one of the many reasons why the AFA got out of the post season tournament business.
A review of last week’s Midwest, Northeast and Metro South tournament results shows that out of the 22 teams – representing 10 different leagues, all but one league champion won their opening round games. Only the South Central League, who had 4 teams entered in the Midwest tournament, had their league champ (Oklahoma Badboyz) eliminated.
At that rate, the likelihood of a ânon-league championâ winning any of those 3 regional type tournaments sure seems remote. The weekly tournament results serve as an elimination factor for the AFA national association, narrowing down the number of league champions in each of those regional areas who would qualify for AFA regional and possible 1999 AFA National Championship honors. Because AAA tournament bowl games and remaining league championship games across the country involve the nations top rated teams, the AFAâs national weekly rankings are sure to change dramatically each week from now until the AFAâs 20th Annual National champion is crowned.
Unlike the Triple-A level, where most of the 172 teams that are power rated each week are from AFA member leagues, the Double-A level of semi-pro football is primarily composed of non-member AFA organizations. This makes it very difficult to do a weekly AA ranking for teams on this level. Of the 28 leagues and 160 teams categorized as AA in the United States, only 6 leagues (41 teams) had registered as AFA member teams. For the convenience of the AFA Double-A level member teams, the national office has released the rankings derived from the âtop twentyâ power ratings from American Football News for all AA level teams. Season ending regional and national honors for AFA Double-A level teams will be based on the results of games played between now and the 5th of December. Double-A teams will need to pay close attention to the teams in their regional area that are ahead of them in the rankings.

Central Maine Storm (8-0)
Chicago Chargers (9-0)
Virginia Monarchs (14-1)
Central Ohio Lions (11-1)
Lincoln (Nebraska) Renegades (8-1) and the Wickenburg (Arizona) Warriors (3-0).
Triple A teams should refer to the AFA website (http://www.AmericanFootballAssn.com) for the latest AAA âTop Twentyâ selections.
In the next couple of weeks the AFA is expected to announce its plans for what is being labeled âAFA Project 2000â. Several new innovations to next years national membership program will be unveiled.
