The Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties Announces Inaugural Designer Showhouse

DURHAM, NC (PRWEB) February 2, 2004

The Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties announces the selection of the Whitehall Terrace mansion as their premier designer showhouse. The showhouse will feature over 14 decorated spaces created by area designers and landscapers and will be open to the general public from April 24 through May 9, 2004.

Located at 105 West Knox Street in Durham, North Carolina, Whitehall Terrace was built in the 1920s by renowned architect George Watts Carr for the prominent Wright family. The facade features a two-story portico with neoclassical detailing at the cornices, in the molded lintels above the first-story French doors opening onto the front patio and in the entrance surrounds. The home also boasts a pool and extensive grounds.

Designers and landscapers were invited to preview the home in the Fall of 2003 and submit their proposals for renovating specific rooms in the house. The selected participants will work for several weeks in March to transform their design space into a showcase for their talent.

“The Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties is delighted to bring our first Designer Showhouse to historic Durham,” said Mary Eileen Anderson, President of The Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties. “Duke Park is a gem of a neighborhood, and we are proud to complement existing urban renewal projects with the visitors and exposure that the showhouse will attract. This project beautifully reflects the JLDOC’s commitment to improving communities both by raising funds and by revitalizing one of Durham’s residential treasures.”

In addition to showcasing local design talent, the showhouse schedule will consist of several special events that include ladies night out gatherings and a boutique. The finished showhouse will open April 24, 2004 and continue through May 9, 2004. House hours are Thursday through Sunday, 10:00a.m to 5:00 p.m. Tickets will be available at selected outlets and online at http://www.jlshowhouse.com beginning January 2004. Tickets are $ 15 and group tours are available by request.

Proceeds from public admissions to the Whitehall Terrace showhouse and gardens, related special events, corporate and private sponsorship and program advertisements will support community projects undertaken by the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties that focus on improving the lives of senior citizens. Information on senior issues will be displayed at the showhouse and senior members of the community will be involved in the daily showhouse activities.
