8th Annual Hometown World Series Tournament

The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission (YSRC), an initiative of the Skillman Foundation, is hosting its eighth annual Hometown World Series Baseball Tournament, August 8 through 11, 2002 at the Jayne Field Complex. This yearÂ’s event is being co-sponsored by Coca-Cola®, the Detroit Recreation Department and the Junior League of Detroit. Jayne Field is located on Charles Street, just east of Conant Avenue.

The purpose of the Hometown World Series is to showcase local youth players in an atmosphere of sportsmanship, teamwork, and diversity. “World Series” games begin at 12 Noon on Thursday, August 8th and Friday, August 9th, while game action starts at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 10th and Sunday, August 11th. Opening day activities on Thursday, August 8th will feature ceremonial “first” pitches by the mayors of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park, and a high stepping performance by the Drummer Boys Ensemble of Detroit. Festivities are scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.

Youth baseball teams from Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park will play in five age divisions. The winning team from each division will receive game tickets and recognition from the Detroit Tigers. Randy McNeil, Executive Director of the YSRC said, “The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission is proud to host this annual post-season tournament for the youth of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park. We know this four-day event provides these players with an excellent opportunity to play their best game, before a city-wide audience.”

The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission was launched in 1995. The objective of the Commission is to coordinate, advocate and support quality after-school and recreational programs for children and youth in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park.
