DIAMOND MIND Projects Yankees, Mets as Top Major League Teams in 2008
San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) April 2, 2008
ImagineSports, Inc., a leading online multiplayer sports games company, has released its predictions for the 2008 Major League Baseball season produced by the company’s highly-proclaimed Diamond Mind® software, widely recognized as the most realistic and statistically-accurate baseball simulation. ImagineSports ran the 2008 season hundreds of times utilizing its proprietary player performance projection models to determine how each team would do.
“We have particularly good news for New York fans,” said Dayne Myers, founder and CEO of Imagine Sports. “We project the Yankees to lead the MLB with 97 wins and the Mets to win 92, tops in the National League.”
To determine the projections, ImagineSports first determines the projected statistical performance probabilities of each Major League player, including rookies, based on the company’s proprietary methodologies developed by renowned baseball statistics expert Tom Tippett, creator of Diamond Mind. The company then loads each team’s projected rosters and management profiles into Diamond Mind and runs the entire 2008 season several hundred times – pitch-by-pitch each time. The work on the projections begins in December each year, culminating in the running of the simulations in late March.
“It takes us only about seven hours to run the actual simulations, utilizing multiple computer systems,” said Myers. “The real time-consuming effort is all of the research that goes into determining the player performance tendencies, the effects of home parks, and how each team is likely to be managed.”
In the past, predictions from Diamond Mind have proven to be among the most accurate. In 2006, the simulations picked 7 of the 8 playoff teams, including picking all of the division winners except for a tie in the NL West. In 2007, the Diamond Mind predictions we particularly accurate in projecting team wins for the season, and the post-season predictions were almost exactly on-target, predicting nearly every playoff series correctly, including projecting the Red Sox to barely edge the Indians in 7 games in the ALCS then easily defeat the Rockies in the World Series.
For 2008, the Diamond Mind projections see the Yankees (97 wins), Tigers (95) and Angels (92) winning the American League divisions with the defending World Series Champion Red Sox winning 93 games to claim the Wild Card spot. In the National League, the projections show the Mets winning 92 games to claim the East and Rockies winning 91 games to win the West, both by comfortable margins, while the Cubs (86 wins) edge the Cardinals in the NL Central. The NL Wild Card race looks to be a hot one, with the Braves and Dodgers each predicted to win 85 games but Atlanta having a slightly better chance to make the playoffs, though St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee are also very close.
The biggest disappointment?
“Look for the Diamondbacks to drop,” Myers said. “We project them to fall from NL West champions to a losing record of 79-83.”
A complete run-down of each Major League team’s projections and an explanation of the methodology used by Diamond Mind are available at the company’s website, http://www.ImagineSports.com, where users can also play Diamond Mind ’08, ImagineSports’ online simulation game utilizing the same player data used in the projections.
