Detroit Tigers RHP Justin Verlander put up another good start Wednesday with eight innings of shutout ball against Minnesota. Verlander worked mostly off his fastball, which touched in the neighborhood of 98 MPH on occasions and allowed only six hits. Oddly for such a hard thrower, he had no strikeouts and no walks.
Verlander has had just one start where he got knocked around. RHP Todd Jones notched his 11th save Wednesday night in what is, for him, his typically rough fashion, all sports betting fans were exited about this pitching match-up.
Jones, who has just one blown save this season, began the eighth inning with a ground out. Gave up a one-out single and then got his second out on a fly ball to the warning track. Jones walked the next batter (Rondell White’s first unintentional walk of the season) before getting a pop-up to second to close out Detroit’s 2-0 win over Minnesota.
C Vance Wilson is another example of things going right for the Detroit Tigers this year. Wilson, in the lineup Wednesday night because regular C Ivan Rodriguez was serving as the Tigers’ DH, cranked a two-run home run with two out in the eighth against LHP Johan Santana of the Twins. It was the winning hit in Detroit’s 2-0 victory over Minnesota.
Kansas City RHP Joe Mays who signed with the Royals for million in January as a free agent was released after clearing waivers. He was designated for assignment on May 8th. Mays was 0-4 with a 10.27 earned run average in six starts.
RHP Elmer Dessens worked 2 1/3 innings on Tuesday to become the sixth pitcher born in Mexico to pitch 1,000 innings in the Major Leagues. The other five are Fernando Valenzuela, Esteban Loaiza, Ismael Valdez, Teddy Higuera and Armando Reynoso.
OF Shane Costa, who went on the disabled list April 29 with a strained left hamstring reported Wednesday to Double-A Wichita in a minor league rehab assignment. If Costa has no setbacks he could join the club this weekend in Kansas City.
RHP Runelvys Hernandez starts the series finale Wednesday at Cleveland. He has yielded 11 earned runs and 18 hits in 9 2/3 innings over his previous two starts. Obtaining a career record of 1-9 with a 6.49 ERA in 12 May starts.
RF Reggie Sanders is 1-for-15 since returning to the lineup after sitting out six games with a strained left hamstring.
