Pam King Sams, CFRE, of Children’s National Medical Center, Named 2010 Outstanding Fundraising Professional

Children’s National Medical Center Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer Pam King Sams, CFRE, was named Thursday as the 2010 Outstanding Fundraising Professional by the Association of Fundraising Professionals during the 9th annual National Capital Philanthropy Day.

“We are pleased to recognize Pam with this honor,” said Association of Fundraising Professionals DC Chapter President Nancy Racette, CFRE. “She is truly dedicated to making a difference for children in this region and around world.”

The Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award recognizes individual achievement resulting in significant philanthropic support for nonprofit organizations as well as the encouragement of others to take leadership roles in philanthropy.

In her role at Children’s National, King Sams is responsible for managing the $ 500 million Transforming Children’s Health campaign, which funds Children’s National’s strategic initiatives. In 2009, she helped facilitate a $ 150 million gift from the Government of Abu Dhabi to create the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, the largest gift ever for pediatric surgery. Partnering with philanthropist and businessman Joseph E. Robert, Jr., and the hospital’s physicians and scientists, she helped shape the vision for the Institute and form the historic partnership with Abu Dhabi.

“I’ve been lucky to work in a field where I can give back to society – and children specifically,” said King Sams. “The reason I can do that is because every day I am fortunate to partner with physician-scientists who have transformational ideas and donors who believe in helping to make a difference in the world.”

Andrew Blair, chairman of Children’s Hospital Foundation Board, said, “Throughout her more than 20 years as a development professional, Pam has made an immeasurable impact on the lives of both children and adults through her passion for health-related causes. I can think of no one more deserving of this honor.”

King Sams has a long history of supporting health and children’s causes. Before coming to Children’s National, King Sams was the director of development at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and the executive director and operations officer of the Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital Foundation. She is certified as a fundraising executive through the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and has served as a board member for the AHP Foundation. Pam currently serves on the Woodmark Group Board of Directors and as an ex-officio member of the Children’s Hospital Foundation Board. She has also served as a board member for N Street Village, a women’s homeless shelter in Washington, D.C.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization that serves as the fundraising arm for Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
