San Diego takes its name from Saint Didacus (in Spanish this is translated to Diego de Alcala) who was a monk of the Franciscan order whose mission was developed into San Diego.
Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed in the San Salvador from Navidad in New Spain and claimed San Diego for the Spanish Empire in 1542. It was first named San Miguel but in 1602 the San Diego flagship arrived with Sebastian Vizcaino and it was named after the mission.
It is the second biggest city in California, second only to Los Angeles, so it’s packed with things to do and see.
It is situated on the Pacific Ocean on the west coast and has an established shipping industry. Downtown San Diego is situated on San Diego Bay and has some stunning beaches that are worth a visit, including the picturesque Ocean Beach, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. There is also a man-made aquatic park at Mission Bay.
It is the fifth richest city in the US, so there is plenty of luxury in this wealthy city, rich in culture.
Visitors can stay at the El Cortez Apartment Hotel or the Horton Grand Hotel, great for those on business in the city at a San Diego office.
In Downtown San Diego there is a world of culture on tap, such as the Spreckels Theater or the Balboa Theater. Sports fans can visit the Petco Park baseball arena and watch the San Diego Padres. Shoppers can visit the Horton Plaza, a colourful five-level shopping mall.
