Faster than the Eye â Video Replay Reveals Rightful Chihuahua Race Winners
San Diego (Vocus) September 18, 2008
In the same year instant replay was introduced to Major League Baseball to review disputed home runs, a video replay has unveiled the tiny â but rightful â second- and third-place winners in the Aug. 31 race for Americaâs fastest Chihuahua.
After careful review, PETCO today announced that 2007 defending champion, Maddy of New York, and Cricket, of Rowlett, Texas, finished second and third in the hotly contested Fourth Annual PETCO Unleashed National Chihuahua Races (http://www.petco.com/petcounleashed).
âAfter reviewing new video from the finish line that was brought to our attention, it turns out these tiny racers are even faster than we thought â and clearly faster than the blinks of our judgesâ eyes,â said Greg Seremetis, PETCOâs director of marketing. âWe made a mistake and are now correcting it by recognizing the rightful second- and third-place racers. Our Chihuahua races will always be about having fun, but as the event grows in popularity, we also want to ensure weâre doing things right and recognizing the speediest dogs along the way.â
The video replay shows that Tiger of Bakersfield, Calif., is still the rightful 2008 champion and maintains his first-place title. However, it was Maddy and Cricket, who truly came in second and third place â rather than Piccolo from The Woodlands, Texas, and Pancho Villa from Lopez Island, Wash., as the judges originally called. Mia, from Elizabeth, Colo., remains the official fourth-place finalist.
Maddy and Cricket will each receive their second- and third-place prizes â a yearâs supply of Royal Canin dog food for each, and $ 150 and $ 100 PETCO gift cards, respectively. Piccolo and Pancho Villa will retain their prizes as the original and honorary finalists.
âAs with any annual event, we learn something new every year,â said Seremetis. âItâs clear that people love the Chihuahua races â and theyâre taking the competition more seriously each time around. Next year, weâll be sure to refer to the instant replay before we announce our winners.â
PETCOâs fourth annual National Chihuahua Races took place over Labor Day weekend between innings of the San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies baseball game at PETCO Park.
