Missouri Baptist University’s new $ 11 million Sports and Recreation Complex opened for the first time Oct. 30 for a very deserving cause.

MBU hosted the first annual Albert Pujols All-Star Basketball Game. MBU’s Varsity Basketball Team competed against Pujols’ All-Star Team, which consists of teenagers and young adults who have Down syndrome and celebrity athletes.

“I can not think of a more appropriate event to host as part of the celebration surrounding the University’s new Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex,” said Dr. R. Alton Lacey, MBU president. “The opportunity for MBU to continue to help Albert and Diedre with their work is a privilege.”

Pujols and Matt Holiday left the Cardinals’ World Series victory parade and celebration at Busch Stadium just in time to make an appearance at the event. They were joined by a host of other celebrity athletes including Aeneas Williams, Jahidi White, Kerry Robinson, Mike Matheny, Jackie-Joyner Kersee, Meadowlark Lemon, Ryan Coyne and Al Hrabosky.

The game launched a week of events surrounding the opening of Missouri Baptist University’s new Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex. A dedication of the complex is set for this Thursday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m.

The $ 11 million facility features a state-of-the-art fitness center, a suspended track and exercise room, a 1,000-seat gymnasium, locker rooms, a concession area in Spartan Hall and is home to the Health and Sport Sciences Division.

The Pujols Family Foundation exists to honor God and strengthen families through works, deeds and examples. Since 2005, the Foundation has sought to help those living with Down syndrome here at home and to improve the lives of the impoverished in the Dominican Republic
