Burmese Writer and Activist Khet Mar Works with Lafayette College Students to Produce Her First U.S. Book

Burmese writer and activist Khet Mar will speak at Lafayette College on Friday, Feb. 24 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. about her new book, “The Souls of Fallen Flowers,” which was hand produced by the College’s Experimental Printmaking Institute (EPI).
The lecture, held at the Chateau Chavaniac in Easton, is not open to the public, but media are welcome.
Tortured and imprisoned over the years for her public support of human rights, Mar and her family left Burma in 2009 and now reside at the City of Asylum in Pittsburgh, a sanctuary for writers who suffered persecution in their home countries.
With temporary legal status in the U.S., Mar is a rare voice of Burma. “The Souls of Fallen Flowers” is Mar’s first book published in this country and it chronicles her life from growing up in Burma to being housed with death-row inmates while imprisoned to her new life in the U.S.
EPI’s resident book artist, MaryAnn Miller, and students Christa Martinez ’13 of Houston, Texas; Sarah Quickel ’13 of Haddonfield, N.J.; and CaPA Fellow Elizabeth Anderson ’14 of Madison, N.J. helped produce the beautiful hand-sewn, hand-bound limited edition book, which commemorates EPI’s 15th year of operation.
During Khet Mar’s first visit to Lafayette in November, 2011, she met with a family of fellow Burmese refugees living in Easton.
Khet Mar’s visits are made possible through the combined efforts of Jim Toia, director of the Community-Based Teaching program in Lafayette’s art department and founding coordinator of the Creative and Performing Arts (CaPA) Fellowship program; and Curlee Raven Holton, David M. ’70 and Linda Roth Professor of Art, head of art department and founding director of EPI.
The CaPA program was created through the generosity of Bruce ’65 and Jackie P. ’02 Maggin.
