Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Bahrain will watch and support the Azkals as the team face Bahrain today in the first-ever Bahrain-Philippines Football Friendship Games at the National Stadium in Rifa. The Philippine side will play against Bahrain’s U-23 selection team. The second tune-up match will be on July 18 at the Muharraq Club Stadium in Arad at 7 pm The friendlies were organized by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and the Bahrain Football Association (BFA). The Azkals arrived in Bahrain yesterday for their one-week acclimatization and training for the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers against Kuwait on July 23 and 28. Coach Hans Michaels Weiss said Kuwait is the ‘hardest task so far’ for the Azkals. “They are a very strong team in Asia. I wish I had a year to prepare for the match-ups, rather than a couple of weeks, then we should have a good chance against them.” Weiss told FIFA. Weiss is preparing a defensive line-up against Kuwait with midfielders Jason de Jong and Patrick Hinrichsen coming in to reinforce the team. The PFF is still appealing the suspension of Aly Borromeo and Stephan Schrock to FIFA’s disciplinary committee.
