West Baden Springs Hotel to Host Vintage Base Ball World Series
West Baden Springs, Ind. (Vocus) May 11, 2009
Imagine baseball played on an open field with underhanded pitching and without gloves. That is exactly what you will find at the Vintage Base Ball World Series , to be held at West Baden Springs Hotel June 27-28. Six Midwestern teams will don the vintage uniforms and recreate the language and customs of 19th century base ball (it was commonly referred to by two words at that time) while competing in live action games.
The roster of teams includes the Indianapolis Hoosiers, Cincinnati Red Stockings, Indianapolis Blues, St. Louis Unions, Batesville Lumbermen and Cincinnati Buckeyes. For the series, the teams will play by the 1864 rule books. (Full schedule included below)
West Baden has a strong baseball history. Major league baseball teams, such as the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates used to come to the French Lick/West Baden area for spring training. In fact, the last time the Cubs won the World Series is when they trained at West Baden in 1908. Some people credit the local mineral water to the team’s early success.
Now, 100 years later, the public can once, again, see the sport in its original form when the Vintage Base Ball World Series convenes in West Baden.
The event will be great fun for the entire family. Admission is free of charge and bleacher seats will be provided. Guests may bring lawn chairs. Ballpark favorites such as hotdogs, popcorn and peanuts will be available for purchase at the concession stand. Rounding out the experience will be live entertainment from a Dixieland band and giveaways from the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory.
