1. In the past 25 seasons, the teams with the highest payroll in the American League have compiled a .574 winning percentage, which is the equivalent of 93 wins in a regular season. In the NL, due mostly to the drag by the mid-1980s Braves and modern Mets, the high rollers have a .546 winning percentage, or 88.4 wins in a 162-game regular season.
