Cubs’ Soriano Teams with Cancer Foundation to Fight Neuroblastoma
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 3, 2009
Chemotherapy, radiation, surgery…scary terms for an adult with a cancer diagnosis. Imagine an infant or toddler facing these same procedures. That’s what Chicago Cub Alfonso Soriano’s Godson Leonardo Astacio II is up against in his battle with neuroblastoma, so the major leaguer is going to bat for the cause.
On June 20, Soriano is teaming with the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation (CNCF- http://www.nbhope.org) and WGN Radio 720-AM personality Dave Kaplan for a Grand Slam Gala http://www.grandslamgala.org to raise awareness and funds for this aggressive form of pediatric cancer. Additional sponsors of the 2009 CNCF Grand Slam Gala include the Chicagoland Lincoln/Mercury Dealers Association, the Lake County, IL Convention & Visitors Bureau, Start Your Engines Fuel System Revitalizer, PW Proven Winners Color Choice Flowering Shrubs/Spring Meadow Nursery and Auto Owners Insurance.
The event will be held at the Cubby Bear, 1059 W. Addison St., in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood, from 4 to 7 pm. Open to the 21 and older crowd for a $ 125 donation, the event includes drinks, food, a gift bag and the opportunity to meet local baseball greats and other fans willing to make a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer. A variety of baseball and local entertainment items will also be auctioned off during the event. Tickets are limited, so visit http://www.grandslamgala.org to register for this memorable event.
About Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is a solid tumor cancer that arises in immature nerve cells and strikes mainly infants and toddlers. It is the most common cancer affecting infants with an incidence rate of almost double that of leukemia. Its cause is unknown. Nearly 70 percent of children diagnosed with neuroblastoma have advanced-stage disease. Less than 30 percent of children with advanced stage disease live five years.
About Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation
The Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation (CNCF) is a non-profit national health organization committed to finding a cure for neuroblastoma through research, education, awareness and advocacy. CNCF initiatives educate the public about a disease dramatically lacking in awareness and funding. It serves as an advocate for families by influencing relevant legislation, as well as a liaison between healthcare providers and families. Hope unites us. To learn more, visit http://www.nbhope.org.
