The Willie McGee FoundationÂ’s Board of Directors and Friends will present annual scholarships to eight (8) Bay Area college bound students on Tuesday, August 16th from 4pm- 7pm at its “Sowing Seeds Annual Giving Campaign Kick Off” to be held the foundations’ new offices located at 1160 Brickyard Cove Road in Richmond.

In partnership with Chela Education Financing, two scholarships will be given to Krystal James (Hercules Middle High School, Hercules) and Emmanuel Gavino (College Prep Academy, Oakland) for the East Bay California Cash for College Scholarship.

Six scholarships from the Willie McGee Foundation annual fund will be presented, to include Lillian Amaechi (Lowell High School, San Francisco), Max Caraballo (Lionel Wilson Preparatory Academy, Oakland), Candase Chambers (McClymond High School, Oakland), Valerie Marman (Phillip Burton High School, San Francisco), Nicon Robinson (Oakland Technical High School, Oakland) and Ebony Young (Skyline High School, Oakland).

Long a local hero to the East Bay, retired St. Louis baseball star McGee grew up in Richmond, and as he became an accomplished and distinguished athlete remained a dedicated supporter of the community that raised him. With a few of his childhood friends he formally established the Willie McGee Foundation in 2004.

His foundationÂ’s mission is to create an environment that inspires an increasing number of youth to complete their high school education, pursue continuing education, and become active members of their community. Through its athletic, educational, advocacy and cultural programming, the foundation seeks to help East Bay children and youth develop a sense of self-esteem and purpose.
