Pennsylvania’s best, the Steelers are one of the most famous and successful football teams in America. Set up in 1933 by Art Rooney they were named after the abundent steel industry in the Pittsburgh area. The NFL’s fifth oldest franchise the Pittsburgh Steelers were founded as the Pittsburgh Pirates on July eight, 1933, by Art Rooney.

The control of the Steelers has remained within the Rooney family since its founding. The current owner is Art’s child, Dan Rooney, who has given much control of the franchise to his child Art Rooney II. Famous for a fanbasenicknamed Steeler Nation and currently play their home games in Heinz Field on Pittsburgh’s North Side, which also hosts the Uni of Pittsburgh Panthers. Heinz Field was built in 2001 and replaced three rivers Stadium which hosted the Steelers for 31 seasons. Prior to three rivers, the Steelers had played their games in Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field.

The Steelers had a unique position where they found themselves having 3 first rivals with all three playing in the same division as theirs. Further, the team also have other rivals in the post season games namely the Oakland Raiders, new england Patriots, and the Dallas Cowboys. An intrastate rivalry between the Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles also arose but they play against each other only once every 4 years as per scheduling laws. The competition between the Cleveland Browns and the Steelers started way back 1950 when they first played against each other. At the beginning of the rivalry, the Browns had the advantage over the Steelers who had a 9-31 record at that time. It was only in the near past that the Steelers took over the rivalry for the 1st time ever with a 17-3 record. To intensify the competition, former head coach of the Steelers had essentially coached the Browns earlier in his career.

The Pittsburgh Steelers won their first game at the MT Bank Stadium in Baltimore and 3 years after, the Ravens crushed the Steelers in a game at the Heinz field. The competition between the Ravens and the Steelers is sort of a seesaw winning and losing against each other and be a great complement by showing their fans how they can field really powerful defenses against each other. The Cincinnati Bengals dates the rivalry with the Steelers from the 1970 season when the merger was completed.

This particular win was partly due to the knee injury the Bengal’s quarterback experienced and thus was forced to leave the game. Later, in 2008, the Patriots were accused of videotaping hand signals of the opposing team’s coaches which added to more argument. The rivalry between the Oakland Raiders and Steelers was most heated during the 1970’s.

The Steelers are one of the few NFL teams that consistently sell out each and every game they play.As a team, the Pittsburgh Steelers will still have a lot of challenges to face, not just with their current rivals but with the new and approaching groups of the NFL. Though the team have had an impact as one of the most competitive teams in the NFL, they still need to perform at their best to balance out every competitor they play against. This year will be another exciting year with more success on the way. Steeler tickets can be found from a range of online sellers.
