In the spring of 2008 ipConfigure won the contract to deploy its Enterprise Surveillance Management (ESM) software in the American League Champions Tampa Bay Rays stadium, Tropicana Field. As the Rays take on the Philadelphia Phillies for the World Series title Tropicana Field security will be depending on ESM 4.5 to keep the fans and players safe during games one and two as well as games six and seven, if needed. And with the seating capacity nearly reaching 45,000 in Tropicana Field it is no wonder that the IP surveillance contract was awarded to ipConfigure, which is focused on a scalable enterprise surveillance solution.
Tropicana Field was built in hopes of bringing a major league baseball team to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area in 1986. Officials had little luck with this challenge for nearly a decade but in 1995 the area was awarded a major league franchise, the Tampa Bay Rays, who would begin playing in the dome in the 1998 MLB season.
As most young franchises must do, the Rays began building a strong team and renovating its ballpark. Along with ‘normal’ ballpark renovations, such as adding clubhouses, more restrooms, and Astroturf, a state-of-the-art IP video surveillance system was also added.
Tom Karac, Tropicana Field Operations Director, explained the benefits of ipConfigure ESM in Security Director News (Success of team builds crowds, security program), “It gives us more recording capabilities for areas we like to keep monitored, the quality of video is better, and instead of holding on to tapes we can store information on discs,” he said. “It’s basically given us more flexibility in how we look at what is happening, and in how we can respond and get people involved accordingly.”
ESM 4.5 is ipConfigure’s fourth generation enterprise IP video surveillance application that is highly scalable: which gives the field officials flexibility when/if they need to expand the system by easily adding new cameras. Another key component of the software is its optimized motion detection algorithm which delivers low false recording rates and support for high camera quantities up to 120 standard VGA resolution cameras or 60 1.2 megapixel cameras on a single server. This technology is also tied to the live matrix view which only displays cameras with motion which ensures that security officials are actually monitoring areas of the ballpark that have activity rather than watching an empty concourse.
