Childrenâs National Named a 2010 Leapfrog Group Top Hospital
Washington, DC (Vocus) December 1, 2010
Childrenâs National Medical Center is one of only seven childrenâs hospitals in the country named to the Leapfrog Groupâs 2010 Top Hospitals List. The list is based on results from the Leapfrog Hospital annual survey, which focuses on objective measures and processes in crucial areas of patient safety and quality.
âThis year marks the 10th anniversary of the Leapfrog Groupâs work to recognize hospitals for their accomplishments in providing high-quality care in a safe environment,â said Edwin K. Zechman, Jr., president and CEO of Childrenâs National Medical Center. âRecognition by this group of healthcare thought-leaders is an important acknowledgement that amplifies other important accomplishments this year, including Magnet® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and our recent Clinical and Translational Science Award, the only one led by a pediatric hospital. All of these accomplishments showcase our commitment to advancing the finest, evidence-based care to children and families in our region, across the country, and around the world.â
Among the criteria that the Leapfrog Group uses to select top performing hospitals are processes proven to reduce errors and enhance quality, including:
o Computerized ordering of medicines, tests, and procedures
o Staffing with appropriately trained professionals in intensive care units
o Comprehensive systems, including training all staff, to prevent, detect and manage serious errors
o Focused efforts on preventing infections
The complete list of top hospitals, the survey methodology, and more detail about criteria can be found at http://www.leapfroggroup.org.
âWe appreciate recognition from healthcare leaders who see the value in working with hospitals that demonstrate the ability to efficiently deliver high-quality care in a safe environment,â said Peter R. Holbrook, MD, executive vice president and chief medical officer at Childrenâs National. âThis acknowledgement from the Leapfrog Group is especially gratifying given the investment and work Childrenâs National has put into the technologies, training, and processes that assure world-class care.â
