The League for People with Disabilities, one of the regionâs leading non-profits, will honor United States Senator Benjamin L. Cardin and other Maryland advocates during its annual awards and advocacy dinner, âToast to The Leagueâ, Saturday, June 12, 2010. The event, which raises funds for programs for people with disabilities, will take place from 7 to 11 p.m., at The League, which is located at 1111 East Cold Spring Lane in Baltimore.
Senator Cardin will be saluted for his long-time support of pioneering healthcare initiatives, including the Access for All Americans Act, which increased community health centers providing primary care and services to more than 19 million Americans. He has also voted for increased funding for medical research for the National Institutes of Health, among other legislation.
Baltimore resident Janice Jackson will receive The Leagueâs Advocate of the Year Award for her many commitments to the disability community. The founder and director of the non-profit, W.E.A.N. (Women Embracing Abilities Now), Jackson mentors women of all ages with disabilities. She also serves as a peer counselor at Kernan Rehabilitation Hospital and as a board member for The League and Kennedy Kriegerâs Center for Developmental Disabilities Community Advisory Council.
Baltimore-based Atwaterâs Bakery, which is known for its award-winning, locally sourced food, will be named Corporate Advocate in recognition of owner Ned Atwaterâs commitment to hiring people with disabilities. Retired business owner Herb Kasoff will become The Leagueâs 2010 Unsung Hero for his creation of a charity Tennis Tournament at Woodholme Country Club. Last yearâs successful tournament generated record-setting donations, made new friends, and raised hopes for The League and its participants.

The âToastâ event will benefit The Leagueâs programs for more than 2,000 children and adults with disabilities in Maryland.
