Dadgum it! The Phillies have won again. They just beat the Houston Astros 10-3 to clinch their 3rd National League East crown in a row.
Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against the Phillies personally. In fact, I kind of enjoy the team. But they are in the same division as my Atlanta Braves, so it is just hard to see another team win the division that the Braves dominated for so many years.
Now the Phillies have nothing to worry about except resting their starts and getting their starting rotation ready for the playoffs. Oh yeah. They have to figure out what they are going to do with Brad Lidge. I don’t think they have much choice but to go into the post-season with him as the closer, but he sure has been a mess lately. They trust Lidge so little right now that they had Scott Eyre come in and get the first 2 outs in the ninth before they let Lidge close the game out. Hmmm…we will see how that works out in the playoffs.
Here are some random thoughts about the Phillies going to the playoffs in 2009.
They will try to become the first team to win consecutive World Series since the Yankees did it from 1998-2000. Winning the National League East 3 consecutive years is nothing to sneeze at. In fact, it is a pretty awesome accomplishment. But it still stands very small in comparison to the Braves winning the East 14 years in a row. Amazing! The Phillies know how to celebrate their clinching into the playoffs much better than the Red Sox. The Red Sox lost, and 3 hours after their game was over, Texas lost on the West coast which meant that the Red Sox had clinched the Wild Card. So guess what? The Red Sox came back to the ballpark the same night with all the fans gone and very little media around and celebrated clinching the wild card. Talk about awkward!
