Oakland, CA (PRWEB) July 22, 2009

Athletics and Academics, a youth basketball program designed to redefine the student athlete, will hold a “Back to school” one-day super camp on August 22 in San Ramon geared towards youth ages 7-17. The camp, founded by NBA player and Colgate graduate Adonal Foyle educates today’s youth on how to become both an excellent athlete and student. Through hands-on basketball skills sessions and lectures from well-respected athletes and academia, the one-day super camp helps students understand sportsmanship, the discipline of playing the game, and the healthiness of competition.

“Tony is a true student-athlete. While basketball is extremely important to my son, he knows that academics always come first. Adonal emphasizes the significance of being both a great athlete and student, a philosophy that Tony lives by,” said Helen Caletti, mother to son Tony age 13.

Athletics and Academics is a one-day basketball camp that will be held at the Iron Horse Middle School in San Ramon on Saturday, August 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each student attending the camp will receive a free t-shirt, backpack, and lunch. Students that sign up before August 15 will receive the early-bird discount of $ 50. In addition, sibling discounts are available at $ 50 when 2 or more campers sign-up from one family (limit 4 per household). Registration after August 15 is $ 75 per child. “I am very frustrated with the whole notion of the student-athlete in our society. It perplexes me that our youth feel they cannot be both a great athlete and student. My passion for starting the Athletics and Academics camp was to show our youth that it can be done,” said Adonal Foyle. “Throughout the camp, I meet and interact with all of the participants. Beyond scoring points, I love teaching students the notion of rebounding, defensive slides, and blocking shots. It’s important that youth attending my camps have a great positive experience, enhance their basketball skills, and learn that all the dimensions of the game be treated with respect.”

“Many camps put on by professional athletes include a brief appearance. The Athletics and Academics camp is refreshing in that Adonal is there participating throughout the camp – teaching, coaching, encouraging, and spending quality time with each and every participant,” said Tracy Pisenti, mother to three boys.

A key component of the camp is having athletes and academia from diverse backgrounds speak to the students about various aspects of the game, leadership, academics, and the vast array of occupations that exist within the sports continuum. Speakers for the 2009 summer camp will be announced in the coming weeks.
