Youth Sports Coalition Hosts Tenth Annual Hometown World Series Baseball Tournament

The Youth Sports Coalition, in collaboration with the Youth Sports and Recreation Commission, Detroit Recreation Department, Think Detroit, and the VAC Program of Wayne State University, is hosting the tenth annual Hometown World Series Baseball Tournament, July 23-25, 2004 at Maheras-Gentry Playfield. The Hometown World Series is co-sponsored by WB-20, the Detroit Tigers and NFL Charities. Maheras-Gentry Playfield is located on Connor Avenue, south of Jefferson on the Detroit River. Admission is free.

The purpose of this post-season baseball tournament is to showcase the talent of youth players, in an atmosphere of sportsmanship, teamwork and positive reinforcement. Players will compete in five age divisions. The championship team in each division will receive game tickets and formal recognition from the Detroit Tigers. Game action begins at 12 Noon on Friday, July 23rd, and at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 24th and Sunday, July 25th. There will also be opening day festivities on Friday, July 23rd.            

Randy McNeil, President of the Commission said, “The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission is proud to co-host this annual post-season baseball tournament for youth in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park. We know this three-day event provides these players with an excellent opportunity to play their best game and demonstrate their skills, before a city-wide audience.”

The Youth Sports and Recreation Commission, an initiative of the Skillman Foundation, hosts the Hometown World Series in collaboration with the Detroit Recreation Department and the Youth Sports Coalition. The goal of this collaboration is to increase awareness of youth baseball, expand volunteer participation and provide technical assistance to teams, in order to improve the quality of their programs. The ultimate goal is to improve the quantity and quality of positive and constructive programs for youth in Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park, MI.
