The Detroit Tigers Podcast is airing a special episode this week featuring baseball Hall of Famer and legendary Tigers broadcaster George Kell. The 30-minute interview is available for free on the podcast Web site — www.TigersPodcast.com — and through the iTunes music store.
Mike McClary, host and producer of the podcast “for Tigers fans, by Tigers fans,” said the interview takes long-time Tigers fans back in time. Kell talks about his career in major league baseball as a player and broadcaster, and shares his thoughts on the current Detroit Tigers squad.
“George Kell defined Tigers baseball for a generation of Tigers fans,” McClary said. “He brought a one-of-a-kind perspective to the broadcasts and the chance to hear his voice again is a delight. As Tigers fans, we had the luxury of listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio and Kell on TV – it doesn’t get better than that.”
Kell broke into the major leagues in 1943 with Philadelphia Athletics, Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles in his 15-year career. A career .306 hitter, Kell won the 1949 American League Batting Crown by less than two ten-thousandths of a point over Ted Williams. Kell batted .34291 to Williams’ .34276. He appeared in 10 All Star Games including eight straight between 1947 and 1954. After retiring as a player in 1957, Kell broadcast Tigers games from 1959 to 1963 and then from 1965 to 1996. Today he is retired and living in his hometown of Swifton, Ark.
