A month after the team declined its option on the left-hander, making him a free agent, the Navan, Ont., native signed a one-year, incentive-laden contract Thursday. Bedard, 31, joined the Mariners in a blockbuster trade with the Baltimore Orioles in February 2008, but has been hampered by arm injuries ever since. He signed a one-year, .5-million US contract with the team prior to last season, but missed the entire campaign following shoulder surgery. He made three minor-league rehab starts, but was shut down in July and underwent further surgery in August. Bedard was a rising star with the Orioles, but was dealt to Seattle prior to the 2008 season for outfielder Adam Jones and pitchers George Sherrill, Tony Butler, Chris Tillman and Kam Mickolio. He signed a one-year, -million deal with the Mariners prior to the season, but pitched only 24 innings before being placed on the disabled list in July.
