“The Emerald Diamond” – a new documentary about the Irish National Baseball Team – will be screened in San Diego at the Hillcrest Cinema on Thursday, April 12 at 7pm. The film features two songs from former San Diego Padres infielder Tim Flannery.

“Tim has been supportive of the movie since filming began,” explained director John Fitzgerald. “I emailed him early on and explained what I wanted to do and he sent me his CDs and told me to use whatever I wanted. To get that kind of help in the early stages of filming was a huge help.”

Baseball in Ireland began in the early 1990s, despite a lack of fields and equipment. Ireland’s National Baseball Team began play in 1996 at the European Baseball Championships. Peter O’Malley spearheaded the building of Ireland’s first true baseball fields in 1998 – a move that solidified baseball’s presence on the Emerald Isle.

“The Emerald Diamond” opened to a sellout crowd of 250 people at the Burns Film Center in New York on February 25, 2006. A 20-city screening tour of the United States is being sponsored by Boru Vodka. The film will screen at the Westside Pavilion Cinema on Wednesday, April 12 at 7:00pm.
