On March 17th, everyone is a little bit Irish as Saint Patrick is celebrated around the globe. Over 70 million people worldwide claim some Irish ancestry. Kinnaird Bagpipes is taking part in the celebrations by offering “Green” deals. Specials begin on Monday March 1st. Everything green is 17% off until March 17th. Customers will also be entered to Win a Trip to Ireland.

Gear up for St Patrick’s Day with specials on Guinness shirts, bottle opener hats, accessories, and barware items available at Kinnaird Bagpipes. Wear your Guinness gear while celebrating with authentic Irish drinks. All Guinness sold in the UK, Ireland, and North America is brewed at St. James Gate in Dublin. Over 10 million glasses are enjoyed everyday. In 2006, more Guinness was sold in Canada than in Ireland on St Patrick’s Day. Celebrate with a Guinness or Kilkenny or a glass of Irish Cream. Introduced in 1974, Bailey’s, the first Irish Cream on the market, is the most popular. Drink it by itself or add it to hot chocolate or coffee for a nice warm drink. Add Irish whisky to a coffee for an Irish Coffee. Try an Irish Car Bomb, a St Patrick’s Day favourite, by pouring Irish Cream into a shot glass, topped with Irish whisky, and dropping it into a glass of beer. Irish whisky by itself is acceptable too. There are many other cocktails and shooters that many pubs have created for St Patrick’s Day celebrations.

For more traditional Irish gear, consider wearing Irish tartan ties, scarves, sashes, or kilts. For a cheaper version, try a green instakilt. Tartan in Ireland is chosen by county of origin as opposed to family name in Scotland. Kinnaird Bagpipes stocks beautiful tartan ties from County Tipperary, Kerry, Cavan, Cork, Galway, Mayo, Clare, Donegal, and Dublin, as well as the Irish national tartan. Generic tartans are very popular too. Check out All Ireland, St Patrick, Irisher, and Irish Revenge at KinnairdBagpipes.com.

Add Irish Jewellery to enhance your ensemble. Irish pendants, rings, bracelets, earrings, and more can add an Irish touch. There are many designs to choose from including the very popular Claddagh, a symbol of love, loyalty, and friendship, History of Ireland rings, featuring various symbols representing different phases in Irish history, or Celtic Knotwork in many patterns. Another popular design is the Celtic Cross, said to have been created when Saint Patrick combined the sun symbol of the druids with the cross of the Christians.

Ireland is known for its green scenery. On St Patrick’s Day, people wear everything from green shirts to novelty hats, necklaces, glasses, and more, all of which can be found at Kinnaird Bagpipes. There are some cities that even paint their streets or dye their rivers green. However, the only green worn in Ireland on March 17th is a sprig of shamrock on their lapel. The color green is connected to the old flag and a time when Ireland was not free. Some also believed that the “good people” or fairies would carry off anyone wearing too much green, especially children. Despite the popularity of the color green, the color associated with St Patrick is actually blue.

Even Canadian sports have links to St Patrick. From 1919-27 the Toronto Maple Leafs were known as the Toronto St Patrick’s and wore green jerseys. On March 17th 1999 the Leafs sported green retro jerseys for the game. The Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Raptors also don green uniforms for St Patrick’s Day.

Learn some Irish phrases for the celebration. Although “Top of the Morning” and “Kiss me I’m Irish” will work, it would be more impressive to use Irish Gaelic. In Irish, “Happy Saint Patrick’s Day” is Lá fhéile Pádraig sona duit (pronounced law ae-leh paw-rig so-nuh dwitch). Order a pint of Guinness by saying Pionta Guinness, le do thoil (pronounced pyunta Guinness leh duh hull), or for whisky drinkers, try uisce beatha (pronounced ish-ka ba-ha). Cheers is Sláinte (pronounced slaan-cheh)!
